Boiler cover vs pay-per-service

Boiler cover only pays back if your boiler breaks. The honest breakeven is one repair every two to three years.

What happens if you skip servicing

  • Efficiency drops 5 to 15% over 3 years. Soot, debris and inefficient combustion lift gas use. £40 to £100 a year wasted.
  • Warranty void. Almost every UK manufacturer requires annual service. A failed heat exchanger out of warranty is £400 to £800 versus zero on a valid claim.
  • Safety risk. Cracked heat exchangers can leak carbon monoxide. Working CO alarms are mandatory in every room with a gas appliance, but a service catches the cause.
  • Emergency callout cost. £150 to £300 for an unplanned visit, often more out of hours, versus £80 to £120 planned.

FAQ

  • Do I need a boiler service every year?
Practically yes. Annual servicing is required by every major UK manufacturer to maintain the warranty, and by law for landlords. For owner-occupiers it is best practice rather than a legal requirement, but skipping it typically voids warranty and costs more in unplanned callouts than the £80 to £120 you saved.
  • Will skipping a service void my warranty?
Almost certainly. Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Viessmann, Baxi, Ideal and Alpha all require an annual service by a Gas Safe engineer for the warranty to remain valid. The service must be recorded on the Benchmark or in the boiler's installation manual. Some brands accept a digital service record, others still require the paper form.
  • Is British Gas boiler cover worth it?
It depends on your boiler's age and your repair appetite. For a boiler over 7 to 8 years old, with no DIY skills and no preferred local engineer, full HomeCare at £25 to £30 a month buys peace of mind. For a 2-year-old Worcester with full warranty, it is poor value: you are duplicating cover you already have. The break-even is roughly one breakdown every 2 years.
  • What is a CP12 certificate?
The CP12 is the gas safety record landlords are legally required to obtain annually for any property they let. A Gas Safe engineer checks all gas appliances and the gas pipework, then issues the certificate. CP12 inspections cost £60 to £100 and usually include the boiler service. Owner-occupiers do not need a CP12 but the same paperwork is good practice.
