Why prices vary

Engineer day rate

London labour runs £400 to £500 a day. The North East and NI sit at £200 to £300. The single biggest input.

Overheads

Insurance, van and tool costs, parking, ULEZ. London tradespeople pass £20 to £40 a day in additional costs to the customer.

Demand

South East and London have longer wait lists, especially September to December. Wait times push prices up.

Competition

Major cities have hundreds of installers. Rural areas may have only a handful. More competition pushes prices down.

Travel

Engineers in remote areas charge mileage. Inverness or rural Wales installs may add £50 to £150 in travel.

How to get the best price in any region

  1. Get three written quotes. Two local Gas Safe engineers and one online national installer (Heatable, BOXT, Boiler Plan).
  2. Compare matching specs. Same brand and model, same warranty length, same extras included (filter, TRVs, smart thermostat).
  3. Book off-peak. Spring (April to June) and high summer (July to August) are quietest. Engineers will negotiate 8 to 12% off autumn-rush pricing.
  4. Ask about manufacturer promotions. Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Ideal run quarterly cashback schemes (£100 to £200) that filter through accredited installers.
  5. Verify Gas Safe registration. On the Gas Safe Register website. Check both the company and the individual engineer.

FAQ

  • Why is boiler installation more expensive in London?
Three reasons. London engineer day rates are 50 to 80% above the North East baseline. Operating overheads (insurance, parking, ULEZ, congestion charge) add £20 to £40 a day. And demand outstrips supply: London installers run waiting lists where Yorkshire ones take same-week bookings. Net result: the same combi installation costs roughly £900 to £1,200 more in zone 1 than in Newcastle.
  • What is the cheapest region for boiler installation?
The North East, Yorkshire, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland all run 10 to 15% below the UK national average. Specific cities with consistently low quote ranges include Sunderland, Hull, Bradford, Swansea and Belfast. The savings come from lower engineer rates and lower overheads, not from cutting corners.
  • Do online boiler companies charge the same everywhere?
Most do. Heatable, BOXT and Boiler Plan publish a single national price for a given combi and bathroom configuration. That makes them excellent value in London (where they undercut local pricing) and rough value in low-cost regions (where local engineers can beat their headline price). Always compare a national online quote against two local Gas Safe quotes.
