Gas boiler grants and finance UK 2026.

Free boiler through ECO4. £7,500 heat pump grant. 0% finance. Boiler on prescription. Here is what you actually qualify for and how realistic it is in 2026.

ECO4 (free boiler)

UK 2026
Who qualifies
Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, Child Tax Credit. Or LA Flex route: low income with EPC D-G and a vulnerability factor (e.g. respiratory condition, child under 5).
What you get
Free A-rated condensing boiler replacement if your existing boiler is 8+ years old and inefficient.
How to apply
Via accredited ECO4 installer. Search GOV.UK for 'ECO4 installer search'. Council can refer for LA Flex.
Realistic in 2026
Limited. Funding nearly exhausted in 2026 despite the December 2026 extension. Worth applying but plan for paid replacement.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

UK 2026
Who qualifies
Property in England or Wales with a valid EPC. Owner-occupier, private rental landlord, or housing association with funding agreement.
What you get
£7,500 toward an air-source or ground-source heat pump. £2,500 from April 2026 for air-to-air heat pumps.
How to apply
MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf. No homeowner cashflow required.
Realistic in 2026
Strong. Funding extended through to 2028. Demand is rising but supply has kept up so far.

Heat-pump only, not a gas boiler grant. Listed because it changes the gas-vs-heat-pump maths considerably.

Local authority grants (LA Flex)

UK 2026
Who qualifies
Variable by council. Typically low income plus EPC D-G or health vulnerability. Some London and Welsh councils have stand-alone grants.
What you get
Up to £14,000 toward energy efficiency improvements including heating upgrade, depending on council pot.
How to apply
Council energy team or a local Energy Saving Trust hub.
Realistic in 2026
Mixed. Some councils have generous schemes and good processing. Others are oversubscribed within days of opening.

Boiler on prescription (NHS)

UK 2026
Who qualifies
Patients with cold-aggravated respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, referred by a GP or community nurse. Limited NHS trusts participate.
What you get
New boiler installation funded directly via the NHS or in partnership with charities like the Warm Home Discount network.
How to apply
Ask your GP. The receiving NHS trust must have an active scheme.
Realistic in 2026
Limited geographic coverage. Worth asking your GP if you have COPD, asthma, severe arthritis, or cardiovascular issues worsened by cold.

What we recommend

  • If you receive Universal Credit or Pension Credit: apply for ECO4 first. It is genuinely free if you qualify. Keep paid quotes ready in case you do not.
  • If your boiler still works and you have insulation budget: look hard at a heat pump with the £7,500 BUS grant. Best long-run value if your home suits one.
  • If you have £2,500 cash: pay outright. Cheapest option. Save the small print.
  • If you need to spread the cost: 0% over 6 to 12 months if affordable. Otherwise low-interest finance, then a high-street personal loan if your credit is good.
  • If cold is making you ill: ask your GP about boiler-on-prescription, even if the answer is no.

FAQ

  • Can I get a free boiler from the government in 2026?
Possibly, through ECO4 if you receive qualifying benefits or qualify under LA Flex. The scheme replaces inefficient boilers (8+ years old) with new A-rated models at no cost to the household. Realistic outlook for 2026: limited funding remaining, hundreds of thousands of unsuccessful applications. Apply if you qualify, but plan for paid replacement.
  • What is ECO4 Flex?
Local authority Flex (LA Flex) is the discretionary route into ECO4 for households who do not receive qualifying benefits but have low income combined with vulnerability. Each council sets its own rules within Ofgem guidelines: typical criteria include EPC band D to G, household income under £31,000, plus a health vulnerability (children under 5, residents over 65, respiratory or cardiovascular conditions).
  • Is boiler finance worth it?
0% finance is genuinely worth it if you can clear the balance in the interest-free term. A £2,500 boiler over 6 months at 0% costs £2,500. Spread over a 5-year low-interest plan, it costs £2,800 to £3,400 once interest is included. If you have £2,500 cash and can afford to spend it, that is cheapest. If not, 0% finance for the term you can afford comes second.
  • Can my GP get me a free boiler?
In some areas. The 'boiler on prescription' scheme operates in NHS trusts that have partnered with energy companies and charities. Ask if your GP has access to a local heating-on-prescription pathway. It typically requires a documented respiratory or cardiovascular condition worsened by cold, plus the home being assessed as inadequate. Coverage is patchy: roughly a fifth of NHS trusts participate as of 2026.
